Good Foot Guide - Callouses/Corns

Callouses are nature’s way of protecting sensitive areas caused by friction and rubbing of the skin. They are simply layers of compacted, dead skin cells and do not have roots. Usually occurring on the ball or side of the foot, or on the heel, the pressure of these hard masses on sensitive nerves in the skin can be painful. Unlike corns which have a central nucleus, callouses are creamy yellow in appearance and vary in thickness and size, but usually cover larger areas than a corn. Callouses tend to produce a burning sensation rather than the localised pain caused by corns.

Remedy
It is necessary to use a remedy that can penetrate the dense build up of hard skin caused by callouses. A number of methods can be used to remedy the problem.
SCHOLL Callous Removal Pads contain discs specially formulated with the active ingredient Salicylic Acid which, when applied directly on the affected area, penetrate and remove the dead skin. Note: when using this product, ensure you read the instructions carefully, as Salicylic Acid should not be used if the area around the corn is inflamed or the skin is broken. As an alternative treatment, try using the SCHOLL Corn & Callous File - refer to the section on Corns for further information.
To prevent recurrence of callouses, use SCHOLL Callous Foam Cushions designed to cushion and protect the area from friction and rubbing.
Note to diabetics or people with severe circulatory disorders - never use any product containing Salicylic Acid without first consulting with your doctor or podiatrist.

Prevention
At the first sign of tenderness, SCHOLL Sore Spot Moleskin may be used to help  protect the area. Be sure shoes fit properly.

One of the most common foot problems that people suffer from are corns. They are the result of friction and pressure from ill-fitting shoes. There are two main types of corns, the most common being hard corns that develop on the top or ends of the toes. Soft corns occur between or on the sides of the toes and are kept damp and irritated by moisture and the pressure of the surrounding toes. Both hard and soft corns form in a conical shape, being small, shiny and sharply defined, they have a central cone shaped nucleus. They point down into the skin until they reach nerve endings, causing pain and discomfort as pressure is applied.
SCHOLL Polymer Gel is the latest in advanced footcare technology. This unique material provides clinically proven cushioning for both hard and soft corns. The clear and discreet polymer cushions conform to the shape of your foot, providing immediate relief from pain. The use of advanced Polymer technology is another example of SCHOLL's commitment to advances in Footcare.

Remedy
As with callouses, there are a number of effective remedies for the treatment of corns. For hard corns, use SCHOLL Corn Removal Pads or SCHOLL Washproof Corn Removal Plasters and for soft corns use SCHOLL Soft Corn Removal Pads. These products contain discs specially formulated with the active ingredient Salicylic Acid which, when applied directly on the affected area, penetrate and remove the corn. Note: when using these products, ensure you read the instructions carefully, as Salicylic Acid should not be used if the area around the corn is inflamed or the skin is broken.
Alternatively, corns can be effectively removed by the use of SCHOLL’s Corn Removing Liquid. This is a liquid form of Salicylic Acid and is applied directly on the corn. Again, read the instructions carefully before use. SCHOLL Corn Felt Pads should then be applied to protect the area, and further relieve painful pressure.
Another method of treatment is to use a SCHOLL Corn and Callous File. With two different abrasive surfaces - fine and course sides - this file is ideal in effectively removing degrees of hard skin.
Note to diabetics or people with severe circulatory disorders - never use any product containing Salicylic Acid without first consulting with your doctor or podiatrist.
