FAQs – Ingrowing Toenail Complete Clip & Spray Kit

1. What is an ingrowing toenail?

Ingrowing toenails usually affect the big toe(s) and often start with intense pressure between the edge of the nail and the skin, causing discomfort and redness.

If left untreated, or if cut incorrectly, the nail can become ingrown, piercing the skin and grow into the flesh causing sharp pain, swelling and redness. In some cases the area can bleed and show signs of infection such as pus or discharge and colour changes to the surrounding skin.
If the nail has pierced the skin, please seek advice from your healthcare professional.

2. What causes an ingrowing toenail?

The pressure felt between the skin and nail can be caused by various factors:

  • Nail shape: a curved nail is more likely to press into the skin at the edges
  • Nail care: cutting the nail too short or cutting into the corners of the nail leaving a splinter or a spike can all cause the nail to grow into the surrounding flesh
  • Tight footwear: the pressure from tight footwear can push the nail and skin together
  • Walking style or foot shape: this can cause areas of high pressure between the skin and nails

3. How do I recognize an ingrowing toenail?

First of all you will see it, when the edges of the toenail start to grow into the skin or the tissue of the toe, leading to swelling and redness around the nail. Second, you will feel it, as the affected toe will become more sensitive due to the pressure caused by the toenail piercing into the skin, which leaves your feet uncomfortable.

4. What are the most common symptoms of an ingrowing toenail?

The skin around the toenail will swell and become red and if left untreated it may  grow into the flesh causing sharp pain.
